Chiefs should drop Petersen and replace him with Bruce Bvuma” – Ex-Bafana coach

Kaizer Chiefs have been urged to make a major change between the posts, with former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Alex Heredia calling on head coach Fernando Da Cruz to drop Brandon Petersen and hand Bruce Bvuma a run in the starting XI.

The debate comes at a difficult time for Petersen, who enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign but has recently come under scrutiny following a number of costly mistakes. Heredia believes Chiefs cannot afford continued inconsistency from their goalkeeper if they are serious about competing for major honours this season.

Heredia’s recommendation is clear: Bvuma should be given the opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 position. According to the experienced goalkeeper coach, Petersen has shown throughout his career that he can produce outstanding performances, but his inconsistency remains a major concern.

“I would drop Petersen and play Bvuma,” Heredia said, explaining that Petersen can produce fantastic matches but can also make serious mistakes.

The comments have immediately added another layer to the goalkeeping debate at Naturena. Petersen has been an important figure for Chiefs and currently wears the captain’s armband, making any decision to remove him from the starting XI potentially significant for both the player and the dressing room.

However, goalkeeping is a position where individual mistakes can have a direct impact on results. Heredia argues that a club of Chiefs’ stature cannot repeatedly concede goals because of avoidable errors, particularly if the team has ambitions of challenging for the league title.

Bvuma, meanwhile, is hardly an inexperienced alternative. The 31-year-old has spent years at Chiefs and has already demonstrated that he can handle the pressure of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. Earlier this year, he started the Soweto Derby when Petersen was unavailable, showing that the coaching staff are willing to trust him in high-pressure matches.

Chiefs also recently extended Bvuma’s contract, underlining that the club still sees value in his experience and ability. He recorded two clean sheets in five appearances when he was called upon last season, helping the team secure important victories.

The competition has also increased following the arrival of Renaldo Leaner, who joined Chiefs after an impressive campaign with Sekhukhune United and has previously received Bafana Bafana call-ups.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Da Cruz. Dropping a captain is never easy, particularly after a strong previous season, but the manager must decide whether Petersen’s experience and leadership outweigh his recent errors.

For Chiefs supporters, the situation creates an intriguing question: should Da Cruz continue backing Petersen and allow him an opportunity to regain his consistency, or should he take Heredia’s advice and give Bvuma a fresh opportunity?

With expectations high at Naturena, every mistake will be heavily scrutinised. The goalkeeping battle could therefore become one of the most closely watched selection decisions of Chiefs’ campaign.
